An Escape Room activity about Hannibal Barca, the famous general of Ancient Carthage. Ideal for Year 5 or Year 6, the activity is perfect for group work, starting a new ancient history topic, team-building activities or for a fun, engaging and interactive lesson. The activity can be used in English class as it incorporates some ELA skills or in Social Studies.
The activity has been split into four different tasks; your students will need to complete each of the tasks to reveal a word. Together the four words make a phrase for them to escape the room.

In Task 1 students will read an informational text about Hannibal Barca and then find their way through a maze by answering true or false comprehension questions. If they answer the questions correctly they will reveal their first word.
In Task 2 students will use the same informational text to complete a crossword puzzle. Within the puzzle there are several hidden letters which will need to be unscrambled on the completion of the puzzle to reveal the second word.
In Task 3 students will have to cut out 27 timeline task cards before putting them in order from the earliest date to the most recent. When they have finished their task they can glue them onto the answer key which will reveal their third word.
In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word.
Students can then complete their student answer key with the four words they revealed before checking with the teacher to see if they have escaped successfully.

These activities require NO PREP and have a body of text that students need to read through thoroughly; then they can use the text to find the comprehension and grammar answers. All texts then have an extension activity, a crossword and a wordsearch for those fast finishers. Answers, for teacher use, are on the final page of each document. Each also comes with a teacher presentation to introduce the topic.
Then, there is our Carthage Empire Map Activities and Presentation. This hands-on resource brings history and geography to life. Students will explore the lands of Carthage and beyond, uncover the secrets of major cities, and trace the empire at its peak.
Then, there is a biography writing unit about Hannibal Barca. This unit has been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.
Then, there is an informational writing unit about the Cartaginian Empire. The unit has again been split into three or four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.
Also, there is an opinion writing unit about which figure was the most influential: Queen Dido, Hamilcar Barca, or Hannibal Barca. This unit has again been split into three or four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.
Finally, there is a Carthage Empire Timeline Activity and Display. It is perfect for introducing students to the some of the key events and people of the period. There are 27 posters or task cards that include many of the key events from the era.

In Task 1 students will read an informational text about Valentineβs Day and then find their way through a maze by answering true or false comprehension questions. If they answer the questions correctly they will reveal their first word.
In Task 2 students will complete a crossword puzzle by answering ten questions. Answering these questions correctly will reveal some hidden letters which need to be unscrambled to reveal the second word.
In Task 3 students will sort 27 timeline task cards about famous holidays, putting them in order from the earliest date in the year to the latest. When they have finished their third word will be revealed.
In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word.
